09:25 am: Dream Log
Whereas lady_mishegas sometimes has bad dreams about Nazis, I tend to dream of Satan.

The dream started out in my hometown church in New Lenox, where some sort of celebration was going on. Now, thoroughout this dream, I alternated between being alone and having companions, which ranged from friends and family members to characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first part of the dream I remember, I was alone, wandering through Franciscan Hall in a happy mood. Suddenly, I came upon some sort of small chapel tucked away in the recesses of the building, and I was horrified to discover a small congregation of people in some sort of frozen hypnosis state, kneeling on pews. The chapel was almost completely dark, but every once in a while, a strobe light would flash to reveal some sort of warty, spotty demon in the corner, the congretation obviously under his spell. I made my way carefully through this chapel, and I emerged back out at the celebration, which was taking some weird turns of its own. Namely, many of the people celebrating were beginning to take on their true froms--some were animist spirits, and some were Cenobites from Hellraiser. (Yes, there was more media than usual in this dream.)

I confronted a tree spirit, still looking half-human, who was mostly ignoring me as I spoke through barely suppressed tears. "Yes, you did kill somebody close to me," I told him. "But I want you to understand something. I want you to understand that I have killed those of your kind, and I never thought twice about it. I never thought that I was killing a person. I know that you never meant to take anything away from me, either." The message got through, pretty much, although the tree spirit seemed to find it difficult to pay attention to a mortal.

One of the kinder Cenobites took me aside and mentioned that things were about to get ugly at the party as people continued to transform into their true forms, and he therefore suggested that I leave. I did. At this point, my companion was Giles, who I tried to usher out the door but seemed intent on staying. Heedless of his safety, I left myself and ran out to the woods. (At this point, New Lenox had become a hilly, wooded provincial town.)

The woods were extremely dark, and it was hard to find my way. Finally, at one point, fumbling through my pockets, I came across some sort of electronic device that served as a dim flashlight, and I was able to find my way back out of the woods. I found a very large house, which was impossible to get around, because it was set inches away from a deep, deep chasm*.

At this point, sueg was with me, and we jimmied open a window to climb in this mansion, which was beautiful inside and full of huge paintings on the wall. We sat in a dark dining room to catch our breath. Suddenly, a matronly woman flicked on the lights and walked in. She seemed neither surprised nor angry to find us in the dining room and set about to make us feel comfortable.

Finally, she pointed out a door, which led to an enormous and beautiful chapel, where light streamed in from all directions. We decided to go in, and a service began immediately. But as soon as I entered the chapel, things seemed off about it. For example, instead of a single crucifix at the front of the church, there were many overlapping metal crosses at the back of the room. And the congregation began singing hymns that were joyous yet completely unfamiliar and just a little creepy. Half way through the second hymn, it suddenly occured to me what was wrong--this was a Satanist Church! My entire family was attending the service at this point, sitting separately in various nearby pews, and I whispered that we needed to get out of there right now. But we were all kinda pinned in by people in other pews, who remember, were standing to sing their Hymns to Satan. We did manage to shuffle out, however, and I was just on my way to some new adventure when I woke up.

I kinda think I know what this dream was about, but would still be interested to hear from any armchair Freudians who want to give it a shot.

*Although, visually, it was obvious that this chasm was an optical illusion--just a field that had been distorted to look as if it were a chasm. I knew this, even in the world of the dream, because the line defining the chasm's vanishing point shifted every time I looked at it from a different angle. But I still dare not step in this chasm.

Those kind of dreams scare me.

They always remind me: no Taco Bell or Vicodin before bedtime!

I don't know what it means, but it sounds a lot more entertaining than any number of movies and TV shows I've seen!

As the knee-jerk liberal I am, I can only conclude you're agonizing over the state of the Catholic Church, which is being taken away from you and usurped by vile right-wingers. It's supposed to be a big positive influence (you associate both churches with imagery suggesting comfort, peace, and family ties), but it's being taken away from you and used for something dreadful and evil.

Good guess?

I hadn't thought about the reoccurence of the Church that literally, but yeah, there's probably something to that.

I am actually having a tough time with this one. Of course there is the age-old theme of monsters appearing in what should be a safe place, indicating general anxiety... and honestly, I've been coming back to this for a couple of hours now and I can't make any headway. What do YOU think it is about?

I'll tell you offline sometime. But suffice to say that New Lenox really is New Lenox in the dream, and the mansion is Madison.
