08:56 am: How I Know That Spring Has Truly Begun
There was baby waterfowl to be seen last night, as spare time and nice weather finally converged into a long bike ride.

Baby ducks: 18
Baby geese: 13

Muskrats: 2

I also thought that I heard a frog at one point, and I saw something splashing out of Wingra Creek at another, but those don't count. As usual, I have seen more ducks than anything else, but for the first year ever, the geese are actually in a position to compete.

Then I tried to watch Attack of the Clones and was asleep by 9:30.

The trouble with baby geese -- aka, goslings -- is that they become grown geese.

Geese fuck your shit up but good!! They are scary. They come after you.

There is a little cranny nook in Northbrook that has two resident swans. Over the past couple of years, they have made sygnets (yes, I checked the word for "baby swans"). Yet every time I return, there are only two glorious white swans.

That is why I give geese a very wide berth. Fortunately, their monstrous offspring are fat and hulking enough that you don't have to get close to see them. But in a cute, fuzzy way.

I was trying to remember who it was doing the animal counts last spring! Now I know!
